Why Halloween: The Game Is Banned in Australia
| Point | Detail |
|---|---|
| Decision | Refused Classification (RC) by the Australian Classification Board. |
| Stated reason | Drug use tied to an incentive or reward. In-game beer and marijuana are usable items; per launch-week guides, a joint reveals the noise pings Michael sees and alcohol lowers Fear. |
| Reported | PC Gamer, 10 Aug 2026 (syndicated on the Steam news feed). |
| Steam descriptor note | IllFonic's own content descriptor text says: 'Players can consume beer and smoke marijuana from their inventory.' |
| New Zealand | 'halloween the game nz' is a live search. New Zealand classifies separately from Australia; we found no NZ decision either way. |
| Player response | A Steam thread (15 replies) urges Australians to lodge complaints with the Classification Board; a second asks IllFonic for its view on Australian players pirating the game. No developer reply in either. |
Checked:
What Australian players can actually do
- Wait for a modified build. IllFonic has not announced one; other publishers have resubmitted altered versions after an RC.
- Region-switching a console or Steam account to buy it violates the platform's terms; this site does not walk through it.
- Physical imports do not change the classification status.
The item in question is on the civilian guide: a joint reveals the noise pings Michael sees, beer lowers Fear. The full platform list is on the platforms page.
Australia questions
Is Halloween: The Game banned in Australia?
Yes. It was Refused Classification, which makes it illegal to sell in Australia. It does not appear on the Australian Steam, PlayStation or Xbox stores.
Why was it refused?
Because in-game drug use (marijuana from the inventory) is tied to a gameplay benefit. Australia’s guidelines treat incentivised drug use as grounds for RC even at R18+.
Is it banned in New Zealand too?
New Zealand classifies separately and we found no NZ decision either way as of 5 Sep 2026.
Will IllFonic release a censored Australian version?
Nothing has been announced. Other publishers have resubmitted altered builds after an RC; IllFonic has not said whether it will.
