Halloween: The Game Civilian Guide: Surviving the Night

Where this comes from

This guide is built from two sources dated before and during Early Access: a 6-hour hands-on breakdown of Civilian play recorded at the PAX East build (11 May 2026) and IllFonic’s own Multiplayer Gameplay Overview, cross-checked against Steam board threads from 4-5 September. Where a number came from the demo (the 3,000-point Michael win line, for example) it is labelled as demo data. Nothing here is from our own play.

What you are trying to do

Halloween does not run on generators. The match is scored on who did more: Michael on kills, especially the three Special Targets picked at the start and marked on the minimap, and Civilians on how many residents and players escape. Every escape lowers Michael’s score. That is why the best Civilian match is spent convincing and evacuating NPCs, not chasing the killer.

Talking to residents

Every NPC needs a convince meter filled before they will do anything. Once filled, you get four options:

  • Call the police: several NPCs can use the same phone in turn, each raising the police meter. You can get on the phone yourself afterwards.
  • Hide: risky, because Michael’s Detection Pulse can find hidden residents.
  • Follow you: maximum two followers at a time.
  • Go to an escape: send them on their own.

After a resident has called the police you can talk to them again without refilling the meter. Followers can pick up weapons and will shove Michael to save you, but they are bots; keep the best weapon for yourself. A shove needs no weapon (Circle on PlayStation).

The police meter and the van

Once called, officers scan the area. When they find enough evidence of killings they call in the police van, an escape that stays open for a limited time, sits in light and is guarded by two officers. It is the easiest exit and the hardest for Michael to defend. A Michael who hides bodies delays the evidence, so bodies you find are information.

The other escapes

  • Fence and storm drain: need bolt cutters or a key, then three steps (clear leaves, break lock, open), about ten seconds each. Michael can re-close them.
  • Car: battery, gas and keys. Michael’s Blackout stalls it. Residents will not board if the doors are closed or it is full.
  • Cellar doors: break them open; limited uses.

Every escape makes noise Michael can hear, and he knows where all of them are. Do not dance next to an open exit.

Items worth knowing

  • Joint: shows you the noise pings Michael sees. This is the item that got the game banned in Australia.
  • Beer: lowers Fear, but blurs your screen.
  • Bikes: chained up; need a key or bolt cutters. Loud, but much harder for Michael to catch than a runner. The demo rarely had more than two per map.

Not getting stalked

Michael’s Killer Sense builds Stalk on you through three levels. Fully stalked (marked) means he does more damage to you, holds you longer, sees your aura and can exit Shape Jump a footstep away. The counters:

  1. Stay in light. He cannot enter or exit Shape Jump in direct light or while you watch him. Streetlights and lit rooms make his arrival predictable.
  2. Keep your camera on him if he is looping you; watched, he cannot vanish.
  3. Listen. His breathing is not directional but it is audible when he is close in Shape Jump. The theme music only plays when your camera is on him or you make a loud noise, such as crashing a bike.
  4. Watch lit hiding spots. Shape Slip lets him jump into a closet or car even in light.
  5. Once marked, run, light to light, and do not fight unless you must.

When to fight

Michael’s Bloodthirst has three tiers that rise with kills; each tier makes him harder to stun and hit harder. Early, he is stunnable. Never take a melee one-on-one unless cornered; he wins them. A gun stuns him, but ammunition is better spent saving a teammate or an NPC, since escapes decide the match. Grouping up to hunt him is a mistake for a second reason: Reality Tear lets him leave any fight, and four Civilians in one place means unguarded residents everywhere else.

After you die

You spectate, and can play a minigame to send items to teammates (a shotgun in one recording). Get on the radio and you may return as Dr. Loomis (armed, with a tracking ability) or a deputy (armed). Escaping a second time counts again. Detaining Michael needs maximum police presence, enough damage on him, and a human playing Loomis or an officer; it happened once in the entire PAX demo.

What is still unknown

The Fear mechanic was watered down for the demo and its full effect, beyond Michael hallucinations, is not documented. The full-game score line for a Michael win has not been published. Both will be updated here when a patch note or recording shows them.
